In these NewMoon Notes articles, I transfer the astrological information of the NewMoon onto the Tarot of the Holy Light Icon chart, so readers can see the emphasis that falls into your chart and your cards as the Moon makes her cycles. Some have asked me why the Tarot of the Holy Light shows the face of the Moon all through the deck. These NewMoon charts should help to certify why that would be. The Moon is Earth's guardian and support, curator of our atmosphere. She is said to collect up the influence of the Sun and all the other planets, rendering those different energies into a palatable baby-food for humanity, which is doled out in harmony with the waxing and waning of the lunar cycle. Every month we look in on the process at the moment of renewal, at the point when Sun and Moon co-occupy the same degree and minute. This puts our attention on opportunities for rebirth, renewal, reassertion of our ideals, and reawakening of our dormant qualities.
I must confess I've had the Devil's own time trying to upload a chart for you this month. Our edenic country life comes with frustrating internet limitations. Also searches across the 'net have not provided me with an appropriate substitute image to share with you. There are a number of charts stacked up here, if you can make any sense of them. So sorry for the inconveninece!
This NewMoon highlights the starting-point of a new astro-alchemical cycle, since the Sun has now entered the sign that inaugurates the Wet Way of Involvement, running from Aquarius to Cancer. Interestingly enough, Jupiter is placed very near the matching degrees of Cancer at the culmination of the Wet Way, which completes during the first month of summer. The inconjunct between the current Jupiter and the Aquarius NewMoon echoes this primal movement. During the side of the chart called the Wet Way, the soul's intent to incarnate attracts qualities and characteristics from all seven occupants of the visible Solar system, in preparation for being born into a human body. These are the qualities that individuals use to fulfill their karma, qualities described by the birth chart, for example. With Jupiter and NewMoon sitting like bookends on either side of this manifestational arc, we have an excellent opportunity to inventory our goals and expectations for the six months between now and Summer Solstice, making sure our personal hopes and dreams are congruent with familial, collective and planetary needs going forward.
Additionally, this focus on the sign of Aquarius implies that there is a need to rethink some of our assumptions about close friends and family. I am reminded of the ancient observation, "A prophet is never recognized in his home village". One can't always expect to be understood by the people one has grown up with, or lived with every day. Don't leave yourself locked into frustrating loops of repetitive pre-programmed historical reactions when chances are that the most supportive relationships you will find this coming month will come from new and different people in your life (Aquarius). Such people may not match with you by age, gender or background, but their ideals, visions, and motives are in harmony with your own. The Aquarius NewMoon reminds us that life continuously provides us with people who have different viewpoints, different experiences, and different sources of inspiration than our own. We don't always have to fall back into patterns that our parents played out and never questioned. Let's grant the future space to show us something new. NewMoon and Mercury in Aquarius help us loosen up our thinking so we can benefit from other viewpoints and alternative approaches.
Jupiter in Cancer also becomes less protective and guarded once he can stop polarizing with the Pluto/Venus conjunction that is opposing him from Capricorn. Around the globe, published astrologers are blogging about the ongoing square from Pluto in Capricorn to Uranus in Aries, which is sucking in any hapless planets that get swept into their influence by square, conjunction or opposition. On January 1st the focus was on Pluto pulling back a drawn bow from Capricorn, pointed at Jupiter in Cancer. This month it is Jupiter pulling the bow, but there is no planet occupying the 4th point where the arrow would be pointed. At this point the Uranus/Pluto square is not actually "new", nor does it have the same sense of urrgency it possessed the first time Uranus and Pluto squared off last fall. By comparison to last month, this month's T-square could be considered merely Jupiter's retrenchment while he completes his retrograde, a mere interlude between his first opposition with Pluto in early August 2013, and his final opposition on August 16th - 25th of 2014.
Now that we are more familiar with the Pluto/Uranus feeling of "push coming to shove", Jupiter can better integrate the square he receives from unprecedented and individualistic Uranus in Aries. Jupiter is also becoming less hypnotized by the continuous propaganda that Pluto is pouring forth through the mainstream media channels. Jupiter is serving as the handle of a bucket in this chart, indicating that he's got more objectivity and self-awareness than one might otherwise ascribe to Jupiter in the water sign of Cancer. The opposition to Pluto gets less compulsive, allowing the inconjunct from NewMoon to arise into consciousness.
In fact, the T-square, the inconjunct and the sextile from NewMoon to Uranus all fuse together into a sort of kite that employs six out of ten moving parts in the chart. Looked at from this angle, another bowl formation appears, with the Mars, North Node and Saturn forming a 30-degree-wide "handle" on the empty side of the Zodiac. Formations like this remind us how subjective the art of astrology can be when it gets down to grips. It is up to the interpreter what to feature, and what to allow to fall into the background.
In the rebalancing process, the NewMoon in Aquarius can take center stage as the true formative influence in this chart, at least on the the individual (non-mass-mind) scale. NewMoon's sextile to Uranus and inconjunct with retrograde Jupiter allows our higher reasoning to command and control our long-established habits, even if the process makes us suffer some discomfort in the transition. Together, Jupiter Uranus and NewMoon make a 2/3/5 triangle, a very creative and innovative hybrid figure where the whole exceeds the sum of the parts. Once we are popped out of our reflexive resistance (t-square in the Cardinal signs), then we can find a better orientation that doesn't compromise our unique sensibilities.
For this chart, the strongest immediate signal of those unique sensibilities is the trine from North Node to Neptune (and incidentally, Mercury). This points to the subtle, background influence of having planets in all three Water signs; Jupiter in Cancer, Saturn in Scorpio, and Neptune in Pisces. These three planets aren't all so near to the same degree that it's a formal trine, but it is quite resonant and intuitive nonetheless. With Mercury so close to Neptune from the Aquarius side, this is a great month for "catching yourself in the act" of being psychic, intuitive, sensitive, tuned-in, and attractive to happy accidents. You might hear subtle voices, see signals you don't usually get, or have hunches that prove prescient. If you will observe these things closely, such events might begin to become more commonplace.
Tomorrow, on January 31st, Venus will come out of her retrograde, appearing to re-start her forward progress. Of course planets don't actually turn around and fly backwards on impulse! This is just an optical illusion that happens when the giant gravity-body of the Sun gets between us and the planet in question. But in this case, the six weeks of Venus' apparent backwards motion have been fairly dramatic, since she's been crossing and re-crossing over the face of Pluto. The first pass happened mid-November, and our NewMoon cross captures the last kiss of Venus and Pluto before she comes out of her distortion and starts to "fly right" again. This is the final moment of Venus' enforced re-examination of her values and standards in the practical and results-oriented sign of Capricorn. Pluto has x-rayed her fundamental assumptions, replacing weak or trivial allegiances with stronger, more lasting insights that will allow Venus to serve as standard-bearer for "what really works" going forward. Considering that Pluto represents the vast, faceless industrial-military-financial borg, perhaps this retrograde pass of Venus is making a remark on the insider deals that have just been cut at the Davos meeting in Switzerland. Because Venus can be a champion of the little people, supporting the private joys and delights of the common man, I would like to imagine that this final Venus/Pluto conjunction is a wake-up call to our supposed leaders. After all, there are many more of us than there are of them! It would be wise for those with pretensions of control to look out for our happiness and well-being, rather than just plot for their own further enrichment. Time will tell!
Overall, I feel great things will be coming from that subtle, background Water Trine, which converges with this month's cardinal T-square through Jupiter in Cancer. Again I find a suggestion that "the little guy" comes out the victor in any contest of wills that Pluto might try to stage. When the great mass of humans decides, one by one, to make their own choices instead of pursuing the artificial goals and expectations manufactured by Pluto's minions to distract us from our own best interests, then we will see a huge de-funding (financially, energetically, and every other way) of our current institutions in favor of smaller, more local and more flexible solutions. What if they gave a war and nobody came? I have a feeling that 2014 will offer us a new set of choices and a new vision of the future. May all of your dreams start coming true this very year!
In Tarot of the Holy Light terms, we have these constellations to meditate upon:
* The Fool and The Priestess in the realm of The Moon (New Moon in Aquarius).
* Emperor in the realm of Justice opposing Empress and The World in the realm of the Tower (Jupiter in Cancer opposing Venus/Pluto in Capricorn).
* The Magus in the realm of the Hierophant squaring Emperor in the realm of Justice (Jupiter in Cancer squared Uranus in Aries). Also the World in the realm of the Tower squaring the Magus in the realm of the Hierophant (Pluto in Capricorn squaring Uranus in Aries).
* Emperor in the realm of Justice quincunx the Fool and Priestess in the realm of The Moon (Jupiter inconjunct NewMoon in Aquarius).
Don't forget to drop these constellations over your birthchart, to see how the might affect you personally.
In conclusion, happy Valentine's Day everybody. May the Light of Nature shine into your heart of hearts and reveal the key to your true happiness!
